January 2011

Weekend in review:
  • Thursday night: wine and girl talk with my friend Alicia
  • Friday: GSD all day; hibachi place for dinner; too tired for Black Swan so will see next weekend instead
  • Saturday: made scrambled eggs with cheddar and prosciutto; more GSD; dinner at Norwich Inn; masquerade formal
  • Sunday: absolutely no GSD unless the Times crossword counts; consumed two breakfast burritos, a quart of wonton soup, a pork egg roll, and an order of crab rangoon; wallowed in bad-scotch-related regret; watched movie Keith which was actually pretty good

We got free carrot cake and coffee at school today, which made Monday morning a little more bearable.

I am totally getting Chinese from the gas station for dinner.

No, seriously, that is where the best Chinese food is here.  Seriously.  The gas station.  Amazing crab rangoon.

Getting picked up in an hour.

Have not located fishnets, hair is a mess, and have not yet fully committed to present level of eyeliner.  Shit.

clementines, grapes, strawberries, brie, cheddar, blue cheese, 2 boxes of annie’s, a prepared but not frozen pizza, greek cookies, baklava, hummus, naan, flatbreads, a baguette, an odwalla smoothie, 3 bottles of red wine, and tissues

You are seriously the best friend ever.  Obvious why she texted you for help.

FINALLY booked flights for Spring Break.

Have been waiting to do so for two weeks, but someone took eleventy years to figure out his frequent flier mile situation.  Cannot really complain, however, as our friends who booked the exact same flights earlier in the month got charged $70 more.

NY TIMES: Jon Stewart is named to the board for the 9/11 memorial and museum → nytimes.com

Jon Stewart, the satirical host of “The Daily Show” who used his television program to push for federal money for the health care of first responders at ground zero, was appointed on Thursday to the board of the foundation building the Sept. 11 museum and memorial.

Joseph C. Daniels, president and chief executive of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center, said that since Mr. Stewart had been master of ceremonies at the foundation’s benefit last year and had been “a passionate advocate of the 9/11 workers, it made a lot of sense.”

He also pointed out that Mr. Stewart lived in TriBeCa, near the site, and had high visibility.

The organization is still soliciting money to operate the still-unfinished memorial and museum. Mr. Stewart’s function as a fund-raising magnet because of his sizable Comedy Central audience also contributed to his selection.

“There’s no doubt about that,” Mr. Daniels said. “We see him as helping raise awareness, and we see that helping fund-raising.”

After the board’s annual meeting at Gracie Mansion on Thursday afternoon, Mr. Stewart said of his appointment, “I’m very humbled.”

“Luckily for me, it appears as if they’ve done 95 percent of the hard labor on this. So I’m hoping to help in any way I can offer.”

He added, “I’m like their intern at this point.”

In fact, The Hot Chick is both a body-switch movie AND a comedy starring Rob Schneider.

If only it also starred a B-list American actress doing a terrible British accent, it would be the Holy Grail of films for me.

Yeah, so I got lazy.

Instead of doing the midterm, I’m watching bad movies on Netflix and starting my reading for next week.  Will start my day early tomorrow so I can do it then.

Just watched a teen movie called You’re So Cupid.  Now it’s time for some mindless crap starring Jennifer Love Hewitt!

Basically, I wear a variation on the same theme nearly every day:
  • black jacket
  • cotton or silk top
  • statement necklace
  • jeans
  • knee-high boots
  • conspicuous ring(s)
  • oversized brown or black leather or faux-leather bag

I bought three black jackets this fall ($90, $25, $20), which has made getting dressed about 1000x easier — and I generally manage to look pretty pulled-together.  Once I identified the stuff I wear most often, it was pretty easy to assemble a wardrobe where most of my stuff mixes and matches well.  Yesterday, I subbed out the top and jeans for a brightly-colored dress.  And one day last week, I wore the above with a knee-length gray accordion skirt instead of jeans, with a thick belt.

I had a dream last night that my dad knew Lorne Michaels and had arranged for me to audition for SNL.

The thing is, I’m not funny, and I’m a terrible actress.  So I was hiding in the bushes outside Lorne Michaels’ house, trying to decide what to say in the email I was going to send him explaining why I didn’t show.

I can’t even begin to guess what this one means.

Ugh, so I am kind of sick today.

When I’m sick, I want everyone to GTFO of my life and let me watch bad movies in bed with Oliver, chicken soup, and ginger ale.  Based on the fact that E was sick last week and I went over with soup and drugs and cuddles, that is not how he deals with illness.  He is not always the best about understanding that other people work differently from him, so I am worried he might be offended if I want to be alone today, especially after I was gone all weekend.

If Netflix really understood me, it would recommend body-switch movies, indie romances featuring B-list American actresses doing poor British accents, and comedies starring Rob Schneider.

Glenn Beck targets a female college professor as one of the most "dangerous" people in the world. She's now getting death threats. → progressive.org

Frances Fox Piven is a distinguished professor of political science and sociology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

At 78, she has taught several generations of students about how and why poor people don’t get a fair shake in the United States and how to increase their organizational power and encourage voter registration.

…

[Beck] accused her of being “an enemy of the Constitution” and an advocate of “violent revolution” and has listed her as one of the nine most dangerous people in the world.

Since he started to air these attacks, Piven has begun receiving death threats.

No words.

Things I did this week:
  • Turned down a free trip to India (hmmm, might have to undo that)
  • Confirmed that I get to go to Hawaii again in March (on the way back from Japan!)
  • Blew two interviews (probably should’ve blown the interviewers instead! might’ve* had better results!)
  • Went to a scotch club event one night and a wine club event the next
  • Did all of my reading for class for probably the first time in my entire academic career (I am going to do the same thing for next week)
  • Bought a really cute top and scarf from my favorite boutique
  • Oh, wait — I actually bought two cute tops
  • Planned out all my outfits for the week in advance
  • Skipped class for the first time since school started

*definitely would’ve… it’s a core competence

Here is the hard thing about leaving New York:

When you come back, it is generally for a specific purpose.  Which leaves you with limited time.  That you must largely allocate to said purpose (e.g., spending time with your friends before they move to London).  So it almost seems pointless to let other people know you’ll be in town, because you likely won’t have time to see them.  Or, if you make an attempt, they make it clear that seeing you isn’t a priority, so why bother trying to make it work?

Meanwhile it is like someone took a Dustbuster to the trail of breadcrumbs leading me back to New York, and I find myself willing to move to the Midwest for the right job.  As a pacifier, I tell myself I can always go back later, but my love for the City is feeling a little unrequited these days.
